Advanced Laser Welding

Fiber Lasers / IPG

Since 1984, Weld Solutions has been at the forefront of industrial welding technology, progressively integrating advancements that enhance our capabilities. Our long-term experience with pulsed Nd:YAG lasers has laid a strong foundation in high-precision welding, yet, as the industry evolves, the rise of fiber laser technology has been nothing short of revolutionary. At Weld Solutions, we recognize that fiber lasers have transformed the landscape of high-energy welding, with companies like IPG Photonics leading the charge.

The Rise of Fiber Lasers

The exponential growth of fiber laser technology has redefined the capabilities of welding applications across various industries. With superior beam quality, increased efficiency, and a remarkable ability to produce defect free welds in the most challenging of metal alloys, fiber lasers are proving to be the new gold standard in high precision welding. Our analysis indicates that over 90% of high precision, high-energy welding tasks (including most electron beam welds) can be effectively accomplished with fiber lasers, and we are dedicated to ensuring our processes align with this advancement.

wobble head welding

Wobble welding represents a significant advancement in the laser welding process by increasing tolerance for process variables. Key advantages include:

  • Expanded Tolerance: Wobble welding allows for a greater gap between workpieces without compromising weld quality, accommodating unexpected variations during assembly.
  • Enhanced Beam Coverage: By utilizing a focused laser beam that wobbles, the process effectively widens the heat-affected zone, improving the likelihood of successful welds even with misalignments.
  • Reduced Sensitivity to Flaws: This technique diminishes the risk of low-quality or unacceptable welds, meaning that the final seam is less affected by imperfections in fit-up.

  • Increased Efficiency: With higher tolerance levels, manufacturers can streamline their processes, reducing the need for extensive pre-treatment or adjustments prior to welding.
  • Versatile Applications: Wobble welding is particularly advantageous in complex assemblies or projects where precision alignment is challenging, thus expanding its applicability across various industries.

dual core / Adjustable beam mode (ABM)

Adjustable Beam Mode (ABM) technology is revolutionizing laser applications with its remarkable features, including:

  • Unmatched Speed: Capable of on-the-fly spot size switching (as small as <50 µm),
  • Enhanced Reliability: Dual-mode fiber lasers eliminate reliance on mechanical or precision optical components, making systems robust against alignment, vibration, and contamination.
  • Unlimited Control: By adjusting both dual beam characteristics—core and ring—users gain unprecedented control over the beam profile, enhancing versatility for specific tasks.
  • Precision Control: Users can independently tune the power and fluence of each spot, offering flexibility in both single-mode and multi-mode flat top outputs.
  • Customization for Diverse Applications: ABM technology can be specifically tailored to meet the distinct needs of various applications, driving operational efficiency.
  • Innovation for Advancement: Embracing ABM allows organizations to elevate their laser technology capabilities, setting new industry benchmarks in performance and efficiency.

laser depth / weld verification

Unlike most weld monitoring techniques that merely track imperfect weld quality indicators such as weld plume, Laser Deep Depth (LDD) technology offers advanced capabilities by performing direct weld penetration measurements and 3D imaging to visualize precisely what the welding beam encounters. The advantages of LDD compared to alternative technologies include:

  • Full Penetration Weld Depth Measurement: Ensures accurate depth assessment, providing quality assurance for the integrity of welded joints.
  • Single-mode Laser Welding Compatibility: Seamlessly integrates with single-mode laser systems, enhancing versatility in welding applications.

  • 3D Imaging of Keyhole: Facilitates real-time visualization of the welding process, along with live 3D viewing, which is particularly beneficial for robot teaching and optimization.
  • Keyhole Alignment in Any Direction: Enables precise alignment of the keyhole regardless of the welding direction, improving consistency and reliability in the welding process.
  • High-speed On-the-fly Welding Compatibility: Supports rapid welding operations without compromising on measurement accuracy, ensuring efficiency in production environments.

Overall, LDD technology represents a significant advancement in weld monitoring, allowing for thorough and precise assessments during the welding process.
